GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS

Aims of Homework

When we give homework to our children at Two Mile Ash, we aim to:

· ensure consistency of approach throughout the school
· develop independence and individual responsibility
· plan tasks carefully and ensure parents/carers have a clear understanding about expectations and give opportunities for everyone to work in partnership
· prepare our Year 6 children for secondary transfer

Guidelines

All children will be expected to complete homework every week as follows:

· a weekly maths task
· weekly spellings
· daily reading with /to a parent/carer
· a weekly cross curricular class based task that will often involve English skills

Homework Time Allocation Table

Year Group Reading Task Time Allocation

Year 3       15 minutes per day 1 hour class and maths set per week
Year 4       20 minutes per day 1.5 hours class and maths set per week
Year 5       20 minutes per day 2 hours class and maths set per week
Year 6       20 minutes per day 2.5 hours class, maths and science set per week

This table shows how much time children should spend on their homework, as a minimum.  However, if your child has not completed their homework in that time allocation there is no expectation that they should spend longer at it.

Homework will be collected, discussed and monitored on the same day each week and teachers will assess and feedback to individual children through target setting and marking, based on the school marking policy.

A record will be kept of the pupils’ progress and commitment to homework and they will be given a half-termly grade for effort.

Children who fail to complete homework on a regular basis to the best of their ability will be monitored closely by staff who will inform parents/carers as soon as they feel an issue with homework may be arising.

Partnership with parents/carers

In order to assist parents/carers with supporting their child’s homework, we will endeavour to provide information in advance as to the topics being covered and the dates when homework will not be set. This will be issued at the beginning of each term.

Homework support facilities

Children will have the opportunity to complete their homework in a peaceful, supervised environment at the end of the school day (days will be allocated at the beginning of each term). They will have access to the library and the ICT facilities to support their work.
